BOOK TALENT
More widely established as the first all Asian drag family in Canada, House of Rice is acollective of interdisciplinary artists with a shared goal of creating work that challenges societalexpectations by merging Asian traditional culture with contemporary drag and storytelling.
Founded by Shay Dior in 2018, the House of Rice has since doubled in size, becoming role models for creative and artistic potential for the queer Asian community, especially in Vancouver. Using the art of drag as a medium, these artists delve into the exploration of their identities’ intersections, navigating the diversity within culture, gender, and sexuality to create impactful performances and powerful showcases, particularly “In Rice-olation”, and “Rice-silience” presented by Upintheair Theatre. With an accomplished reputation in such a short time, both the House of Rice, and Shay Dior, have been featured in multiple documentaries, such as Yellow Peril: Queer Destiny, and CBC Arts: Canada is a Drag, which leaves no question as to how important their work is.
From March 19 to July 14, the House of Rice presents their newest work 米之家 on the outdoor Urban Screen at Emily Carr University Art + Design.
米之家 invites the audience into an imagined world created by the House of Rice, taking them through illustrated vignettes depicting the myths and legends of the House of Rice past. Viewers are then transported to the distant future, a time that has no boundaries around what the House of Rice could look like or be.
